Mini MAC Scholars Career Day
COMO FLAIR partners with Columbia Public Schools and the MAC Scholars Program to build confident self-identity within youth and to explore the path of trade school and entrepreneurship in the hair industry.
Through this partnership, twenty-two 4th & 5th grade students toured our salon environment, learned about the chemistry of a hair strand and curl patterns, met volunteer guest speakers, and observed and participated in various skillsets.
With the leading message being, “clean, healthy hair is the best hair,” students embraced diversity and learned how to thoroughly wash, condition and detangle their unique hair texture in support of living a healthy lifestyle. Barbers demonstrated clipper haircuts and cosmetologists introduced the basics of braiding, hot tool styling, and color application on mannequin heads.
Volunteers spoke on the characteristics of successful people and the importance of surrounding ourselves with positive influences. Students were encouraged to have confidence in trying new things and to dream BIG!
Each student received a personal notebook and writing prompt inspired by Missouri-born author, poet, and social activist, Langston Hughes.
Dreams
By Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!
