2nd Annual GRADUATION FLAIR

With love for our community and excitement for the future of our youth, a group of barbers and hairstylists brought the shop to the classroom! Studio Flair salon and Renz Blendz barbershop organized local stylists and barbers to provide haircuts and fresh styles for kids’ 5th grade graduation ceremony. Providing these services during school hours, on school grounds, free of charge, to every student, is the type of equality and inclusion that we strive for in the growth of our community.

Leading up to the event, our families, friends and clients also got excited and contributed. Through these individual donations, a 5th grade teacher was gifted $420 to shop for her students requesting assistance with shoes and clothing. She created a size and color wish list from her students and was able to purchase 9 brand new pairs of shoes.

Local non-profit organizations, Powerhouse Community Development and The Beacon of Hope Foundation, provided 3 boxes stuffed full of formalwear clothing in various styles and sizes. The week of the graduation ceremony, teachers organized a clothing rack for students to select and try on a special outfit. The leftover clothing donations remain at the school for future students.

On graduation day, the stylists and barbers gathered in the parking lot, had a quick motivational meeting, then set up shop in the downstairs storage room. It doesn’t sound glamorous, but we came prepared and did not disappoint! The kids loved the extra attention and left with a boost in confidence. While we worked we took the chance to remind them of how important it is to stay focused and determined, especially in the face of trial and struggle.

Thank you to every supporter who helped this event come to life! It is our continued mission to celebrate, inspire, encourage and protect Columbia’s youth.

This was the 2nd annual event for 5th graders at only one of our local Title-1 accredited elementary schools. In the future, we plan to have even more support and to bring these services to all 8 Title-1 elementary schools.
